Welcome to A Cup of Joe, and today I want to talk about the talent crunch and finding good people.

The cybersecurity talent shortage is real. According to the company CyberSec, from October through September 2021, there were 162,700 openings just for information security analysts. Now, as Flex Tracks product evangelist, I want to help you not only have a platform that you can use to efficiently run your cyber security program and wow your clients, but also give you the tools to build your team. So for the next few weeks, I’m going to be discussing the talent crunch and what you can do in the three categories of hiring, improving, and retaining your staff. In this series, we’ll use a one-two punch of a blog post and a video supplement. It’s my goal to give you as many new ideas as I can in a format that you can use. Now, before I leave to finish writing all the blogs, I want to provide a little teaser.

See, back in my day, when you wanted to find a new candidate, you posted your job on Monster.com or Dice, and these are both good sites that can drive applicant resumes. But I’ll let you in on a little gem for hiring good hackers and consultants. It’s reddit’s net sex quarterly hiring thread. What exactly is Reddit? In a nutshell, it’s a huge collection of forums where people can share news and memes and comment on other people’s posts. To be honest, it can be a massive waste of time, too. However, the Net SEC forum is a fantastic resource for the latest cybersecurity news, and you can sort it by date, popularity, and this can make it a really useful tool to stay up on the latest malware breaches and tools. However, the net SEK hiring thread is an absolute goldmine in here.

I’ve hired a number of people through the forum who have gone on to be rock stars and leaders in the industry. Anyone can post, and the moderators will definitely let you know when you’ve done it wrong. But best of all, all of this is free for now. Check out the PlexTrac.com website for other blog posts and ideas for how to improve your practice, and look for the new post in a couple of days. For now, this is Joe Perini, PlexTrac product Evangelist, and we’ll see each other soon. Bye.
