Ransomware is a type of malware that locks or encrypts a victim’s data, demanding payment in exchange for restoring access. While basic ransomware may block access, more advanced versions use crypto-viral extortion, making files completely inaccessible until a ransom is paid. Attackers often exploit security vulnerabilities to infiltrate systems and demand untraceable payments via cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. Ransomware can spread rapidly across networks, crippling businesses, government agencies, and individuals. It has become a major cybersecurity threat, causing billions in damages and financial losses worldwide. How Does Ransomware Work? Ransomware is typically delivered through phishing emails or social engineering tactics that contain malicious attachments disguised as legitimate files. Once opened, the malware deploys and begins encrypting the victim’s data. More sophisticated ransomware, like NotPetya, can bypass security defenses by exploiting system vulnerabilities instead of relying on deceiving users. Once inside the system, ransomware scans for valuable files and/or locks the entire disk drive. Using asymmetric encryption, the attacker generates a unique public-private key pair, with the private key stored on their server. Victims are then instructed to pay a ransom—often in cryptocurrency—to receive the decryption key. However, even after payment, there is no guarantee that attackers will restore access. Some ransomware also spreads across networks by exploiting security flaws, infecting multiple systems within an organization. Without secure backups, victims either lose access to their data permanently or comply with the attacker’s demands. Book a Demo Today Book a Demo How Can PlexTrac Help Prevent Ransomware?
